New Year's Eve is one of the many nights throughout the year when you can expect firework displays lighting up the sky. While this is an exciting time of celebration for humans, it’s often a stressful and overwhelming experience for our furry companions. Dogs have heightened senses, which means the loud, unpredictable sounds and bright flashes can leave them feeling scared, anxious, and uneasy.
In this blog, I’ll share practical tips to help prepare your dog for fireworks and ensure they feel safe, calm, and secure when the clock strikes midnight.
Exercise Your Dog
Before nightfall, ensure your dog gets plenty of exercise. Activities like tug-of-war, fetch, or chasing a flirt pole are great ways to burn off energy. For dogs that aren’t as playful or for older dogs, consider taking them to an open field or park on a long 30-foot leash. Allow them to sniff and explore for at least 30 minutes to provide both physical and mental stimulation.
Enrichment Activities
Prepare enrichment activities your dog enjoys, such as frozen Kong's, lick mats, or puzzle feeders. Long-lasting chews are also a great option for keeping your dog occupied. These activities can help create positive associations with the sights and sounds of fireworks while also providing a calming effect. Chewing and licking release endorphins in your dog’s brain, helping them feel calm and settled.
Create a Safe Space
If you know your dog gets anxious during fireworks, set up a designated safe space for them. This could be a quiet room, a playpen, or their crate—wherever they feel most comfortable. Make sure the area is quiet and secure, and include their favorite toys, blankets, and perhaps a piece of your clothing with your scent. Using TVs, calming music, or white noise machines can also help drown out the loud sounds.
Use Calming Aids
There are several products available to help reduce your dog’s anxiety:
ThunderShirts: These compression vests work similarly to a weighted blanket for humans.
Calming Sprays: Products like Adaptil disburse pheromones that can have a soothing effect.
CBD Oils or Chews: Many pet owners find CBD products effective for reducing anxiety in dogs.
Keep Your Dog Indoors
Fireworks are one of the leading causes of dogs escaping homes or fenced yards. Once the fireworks begin, ensure your dog stays indoors. If they absolutely need to go outside, keep them on a secure leash. Even dogs who are normally calm may attempt to escape when panicked.
Ensure Proper Identification
Make sure your dog is wearing identification at all times during fireworks season. Whether it’s a collar with your name and phone number, an up-to-date microchip, or a GPS tracker like an AirTag or FI smart collar, having proper identification is crucial in case your dog gets loose.
Talk to Your Vet Today
If your dog has a history of severe anxiety during fireworks, consult your veterinarian as soon as possible. They may recommend medications to help your dog cope with the stress.
Prevention and Preparation Are Key
Don’t wait until your dog is panicked or has escaped to take action. By preparing in advance and taking proactive steps, you can ensure both you and your dog have a calm and stress-free New Year's Eve.
